Working with children, young people and their parents, I noticed one pattern.
The children who struggled most, with anxiety, low confidence and unregulated emotions, didn't know themselves. They didn't know their inner emotional world.
Without that self-knowledge, children look outside for answers. And the outside world doesn't always reflect them kindly.
Self-awareness is protective.
A child who knows their feelings, their values and their worth is far less vulnerable to the opinions of others. To social media. To bullies. To a world that constantly tries to tell them who they should be.
That protection doesn't come from control or correction. It comes from a parent who leads with warmth, holds boundaries with confidence, and follows their child's world while helping them make sense of it.
But none of us are taught how to do that. And most of us were never shown it.
